Beschreibung:This interdisciplinary workshop explores the contested relations between place and space, the concept of rights, and aesthetics. A series of "case-studies” will foreground instances where legal and cultural conflicts over various sites became entangled in artistic representation: in poetry and fiction, in painting and photography, and in film. Methodologically, we will be aiming to situate some of the more recent thinking in “eco-criticism” (ecological criticism) and environmental theory with the concerns over sovereignty being raised by indigenous rights movements. Our case-studies will include: 1) nineteenth-century American landscape painting and photography, and the Sierra Club’s early preservation battles in California; 2) the so-called “Devil’s Tower” in Wyoming, and Native American religious claims to the site; and 3) present, ongoing debates about land usage and environmental rights in the transnational arctic circle. Students will be expected to read one (short) novel *in advance* of the workshop in June — N. Scott Momaday’s _The Way to Rainy Mountain_ (1969) — and to watch a film that will be made available for students online (“Inuit Knowledge and Climate Change,” by Zacharias Kunuk). Requirements: active participation and a final project (or other, depending on module requirements).
Note: This seminar is set to correlate with Prof. Schneck's project seminar on 'The Question of Rights in the U.S.': Please check the description and options for combining the two seminars in StudIP. For any questions, please contact Prof. Schneck in advance or come to his office hours. |
