England from Indian Points of View: 19th-Century Travel Accounts

Beschreibung: Accounts of Europeans travelling to the Indian subcontinent in the nineteenth century are more numerous than vice versa, but there are also quite a few accounts written by Indian travellers to England. We are going to examine the ways these Indians look at England: its technology, business, sports and touristic sights like museums and dioramas, the roles of women in English society, English food, drinking habits, ballet-dancing and weather
We are going to look at the work of a young prince, a journalist and intellectual, a delegate at an exhibition and a noble lady:
Pothum Janakummah Ragaviah. Pictures of England, tr. from the Telugu, by a Hindu lady of Madras (1876)
Bhagvat Sinh Jee, Thakur Saheb of Gondal. Journal of a Visit to England in 1883 (1886),
Malabari, Behramji Merwanji. The Indian Eye on English Life; or, Rambles of a Pilgrim Reformer (1893).
Trailokya Nath Mukharji. A Visit to Europe (1889)
Please copy the texts from the master-copies left at Copy Shop Dialog, Süsterstr. 29, and make sure you have read them by the beginning of the semester (there will be short test on titles and contents).
Please register for the course in one of my office hours, to be arranged by e-mail. StudIP registration is not sufficient. Anyone registering in person until 21 October 2022 will get a place (irrespective of StudIP), and make a commitment to attend the seminar.
