Beschreibung: This course consists of two parts, one taught by Prof. Siepmann, the other one by Prof. Kullmann.
Although Tolkien’s trilogy is one of the most widely read works of literature it has often been ignored in literary histories and scholarly studies. It is, however, very interesting from the literary and the cultural points of view, as it combines so many ‘discourses’ or traditions of writing and story-telling. Topics to be discussed will include plot structure, mythological sources, intertextuality, language and the relations of the world of fantasy to the real world.

Credits will be awarded on the basis of regular attendance, an oral report and a written term paper. Please register for the course in one of Prof. Kullmann’s office hours (StudIP registration is not sufficient); anyone registering in person until 18 October 2018 will get a place (irrespective of StudIP) and make a commitment to attend the course.
And please make sure you have read the book by the beginning of the semester (there will be a short test on plots and characters).
