Reading American Paintings: Iconography, Iconology, Visual Culture

DozentIn: Prof. Dr. phil. Peter Schneck

Veranstaltungstyp: Seminar

Ort: 15/113

Zeiten: Mo. 14:00 - 16:00 (wöchentlich)

Beschreibung: This course presents both an introduction to and a history of U.S.-American painting in form of a series of close readings of selected works of visual art from 17th to the 20th century. It also aims at an extensive meditation on central questions regarding visual representation and expression in the arts; meaning, affect and aesthetics, as well as painting's potential (and changing) collective (social and political) functions.

Students attending the seminar are asked to prepare the discussion of specific images for individual sessions, as well as to read accompanying secondary articles on specific works and prepare notes and questions for class.

Active and regular participation are obligatory, and may be considered for the final grade. For full credit, students will have to prepare a final paper (pls. check the module catalogue for specifics). Since enrollment is limited, all students signed up for this course need to come to the first session in order to secure their admission.

Please note: This course is specifically designed for master students. Bachelor students may attend only through special admission by the instructor, depending on vacant slots. All attendance requirements have to be clarified with me in advance before the class starts.
