Beschreibung: Many recent publications in contemporary fiction address “the witch” within the dynamics of femininity and feminism, misogyny and empowerment, and belonging and discrimination. A recurrent theme in these novels is witchcraft, equally as a source of mystery and awe as of persecution and danger.

We will analyse two novels which fall under the umbrella of historical fiction and view “Witches, Women and the wild” from manifold perspectives. To extend our understanding of both novels, we will supplement our reading with different texts on witchcraft and witch trials from different ages - from old witchcraft trial documents to texts on magic and superstition to perspectives on new age “WitchTok”.

Please purchase and read both novels immediately after getting access to the course - start with the former (Halls):

The Familiars (2019) by Stacey Halls in its paperback edition -
ISBN: 9781786584151

The Mercies (2020) by Kiran Millwood Hargrave in its paperback edition -
ISBN: 9781529005134
