PLP: English for Future Teachers: The Language of Assessment

Beschreibung: This PLP class can be taken as a PLP class or as a language practice electives course.Assessment is a vital part of every language teacher’s professional practice. Yet in many teacher training courses, little attention is paid to the specific English language that teachers actually need in order to assess their learners’ competences. Too often, teachers are expected to just “pick it up” somewhere along the way.
This course aims to close that gap by focusing on the specific language of assessment. Participants will explore the language of assessment with a particular focus on speaking and writing. They will analyze authentic CEFR-aligned rubrics from international exams and unpack the key vocabulary, phrasing, and register used to describe learner performance. Building on this, they will practice producing clear, precise, and professional feedback—both spoken and written—that is supportive as well as accurate.
Through a combination of rubric analysis, classroom simulations, peer feedback, and portfolio tasks, participants will strengthen their assessment language in English. By the end of the course, they will be able to use the language of assessment with confidence and nuance, integrate it effectively into their teaching practice, and reflect on their emerging teacher identity.
In order to ensure that every prospective PLP student receives at least one PLP class, we allocate the PLP classes during three phases.
Phase One takes place automatically through the Stud.IP system and will be conducted on Sept. 28, 2025 at 11:59PM. During this allocation step, each student may only be assigned to one PLP course (you can and should, however, rank more than one PLP class for this process). Each PLP class has been capped at 15 students for Phase One. Each PLP class, however, is designed to have capacity for between 20 and 30 students.
Phase Two will take place by Oct. 1st after the automatic allocation step has been completed. Phase Two is a manual allocation phase. Any students who did not receive at least one PLP class during Phase One, will receive spots in PLP classes during Phase Two, thus ensuring that all students who need to take at least one PLP class have a spot in at least one PLP class.
During Phase Three, students who wish to take more than one PLP course will be assigned manually to PLP classes. The Phase Three allocation is done primarily on a needs basis and is influenced by the following factors: A) The number of PLP classes you have already completed, B) Your semester of study, C) How many PLP classes you have assigned to your priority ranking for Phase One, i.e. the more courses you rank, the better your chances are to receive a spot in more than one class. In previous semesters, all students have been able to take at least one PLP class and most students have been able to take two to three PLP classes.
As you are certainly aware, some of the PLP classes currently do not have instructors. We are working tirelessly to find suitable adjunct instructors for the two classes that as of yet have no instructor.
You will be informed as soon as there is more information on the PLP classes. We ask you to refrain from inquiring about this matter at this time. It is also paramount that you continue to check your emails regularly throughout the registration and allocation process as this is the means by which you will be informed of any changes and by which Phases Two and Three of the allocation process will take place.
