Beschreibung: ALS B.A. courses are designed for B.A. students who are in or have completed their 5th semester of studies. These courses provide the opportunity to take selected skills developed in the IELP and AELP courses and apply them in a direct and focused way to a specific topic area from the English-speaking world. This allows for a development in both your language skills and your knowledge of American and/or British Landeskunde. The assessment in these courses involves leading a class discussion on a selected topic and writing a short paper (essay or translation) suited to the subject matter of the course. In general, students will be expected to participate regularly and contribute actively and intelligently to class discussions.
This class in debating skills will focus on rhetoric and public speaking in practice. We will analyse and discuss different formats of debating (e.g. the Oxford Parliamentary format, the Public Forum format, the Lincoln-Douglas format) and we will watch and discuss a number of debates on various current topics from the English-speaking world. This course will empower you to continue to build on your vocabulary, including a bank of commonly-employed debating phrases and strategies. By putting these phrases into practice, developing your rhetorical style and actively working on your public speaking skills through debating exercises in class, you will be able to use this course as a platform for building on the rhetorical skills you were able to develop in AELP I: Speaking.
