Students of this course will chose and explore specific themes; e.g. language, art, religious belief, politics, medicine, oral tradition, intellectual property rights, trade-offs, and identity; in relation to indigenous populations of English speaking countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas/the Caribbean, and Australia/ the Pacific.
Specifics themes chosen by students have included (but are in no way limited to) Navaho Weaving and Storytelling, southwestern USA, Warli Painting, Maharashtra region in western India, Ngai Tahu (Maori) Pounamu jewelry carving and symbols, southern island of New Zealand, Tlingit Totem Poles, Alaska USA, Aboriginal Drama- plays by and about indigenous Australians.
