English Popular Ballads: Literary Aspects

DozentIn: Prof. Dr. phil. Thomas Kullmann

Veranstaltungstyp: Seminar

Ort: 41/E07

Zeiten: Do. 18:00 - 19:30 (wöchentlich)

Beschreibung: This bipartite course is designed to fulfil the requirements of an “I-Modul”. The literary and linguistic parts cannot be attended separately.
We are going to examine texts from a literary tradition, which has often been neglected in English studies. Analysing and comparing texts whose origins range from the late Middle Ages to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, we are going to trace topics, motifs, structure and cultural contexts. In the linguistics part, particular attention will be given to metre and intonation. Our aim is to examine the connections (and contradictions) between the typical intonation patters of English and the poetical conventions of ‘bound’ and ‘metrical’ language.
We are going to read a selection of ballads collected in a reader which can be obtained at CopyShop Dialog.
Credits (for both parts of the I-Modul) will be awarded on the basis of regular attendance, two short oral reports, a written term paper and an oral exam. Please register for the course in one of my office hours (StudIP registration is not sufficient); anyone registering in person until 21 October 2022 will get a place, (irrespective of StudIP), and make a commitment to attend the seminar.
And please make sure you have read the ballads by the beginning of the semester (there will be a short test on contents).
