Shakespeare, The Late Plays: Pericles, Cymbeline, The Winter's Tale, The Tempest

DozentIn: Prof. Dr. phil. Thomas Kullmann

Veranstaltungstyp: Seminar

Ort: nicht angegeben

Zeiten: Mi. 18:00 - 19:30 (wöchentlich)

Beschreibung: Shakespeares four late plays (Pericles, Cymbeline, The Winter’s Tale, The Tempest) have often been considered to be among the most fascinating of the bard’s dramatic output:. It is in these plays that Shakespeare presents to us his concept of a cosmic order (with its analogies in states, families, the human body and the human mind) in its most comprehensive way. Topics to be discussed will include dramatic structure and characterization, as well as manifestations of Renaissance culture.
Another issue will be the art of performing Shakespeare: We are going to prepare a performance of "Pericles"; taking part in this theatrical project will qualify as “Studiennachweis” for those who attend the course as a component of “Freier Wahlbereich” or wish to take the 2 LP option of L3.
Participants are also invited to take part in an excursion to Stratford-upon-Avon, scheduled for 30 August to 3 September 2020, where we may see "Pericles" and "The Winter's Tale" (at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford) as well as another play at Shakespeare’s Globe, London). Costs (maximum): € 470,-. There is no obligation to take part in this excursion. Those who are interested in taking part in the excursion should contact me as soon as possible.
The excursion is also open to non-participants in the seminar.
In view of the current closure of university buildings and the ban on direct personal contacts the following enrolment rules apply: Please register via StudIP, and send me an e-mail introducing yourself. All those who do so by 9 April 2020 will be allowed to participate, irrespective of their place on the 'Warteliste'.
Texts: editions of the four plays in The Oxford Shakespeare series (to be made available at zur Heide). Please do not acquire any other editions. And please make sure you have read the plays before term starts (There will be a short test on plots and characters).
