Whatever Will Be - American Speculative Fiction

DozentIn: Jens Bonk-Wiltfang, M.A.

Veranstaltungstyp: Seminar

Ort: 41/215

Zeiten: Do. 12:00 - 14:00 (wöchentlich)

Beschreibung: The United States is the birthplace of modern Speculative Fiction. From the pulp magazines of the early 20th century to bestseller novels that are adapted into Hollywood films, Speculative Fiction has entrenched itself in American popular culture. At the same time, the foundations of speculative fiction - the literary history of fantasy, science fiction, horror and many other genres - are still clearly visible in even the most recent works.

This course will trace some of the history of the genre, will lay bare its conventions, and will offer students in-depth discussion of a wide range of primary texts.

The texts will include:
LeGuin, Ursula K. The Left Hand of Darkness. 1969.
Stephenson, Neal. Snow Crash. 1992.
McCarthy, Cormac. The Road. 2006.

An academic paper, regular attendance and active participation in class are essential for passing this course. Further announcements will be posted on Stud.IP.
