Early Modern Women’s Writing

DozentIn: Dr. phil. Anja Höing, M.Ed.

Veranstaltungstyp: Seminar

Ort: nicht angegeben

Zeiten: Do. 10:00 - 12:00 (wöchentlich)

Beschreibung: This is a V1 LITERARY STUDIES course, also open as the literary studies part of the I-Module.

The canon of early modern writings is still widely dominated by male authors. Yet, recent years have seen a constant raise in awareness that countless female voices contributed to the literary discourses of early modern England. In this course we will trace those female voices that were drowned out in Renaissance scholarship for centuries. We will read and discuss a number of early modern works penned by female authors, from educational treatises and poetry to romance, plays and even political speeches. Among others, we will discuss Queen Elizabeth I, woman playwright Mary Cary, protofeminist Rahel Speght and science fiction pioneer Margaret Cavendish.

Students will be required to
- read and discuss a number of early modern texts (some of which are not available in modern editions, so will be challenging!)
- participate actively and regularly, both in the sessions (including short ‘spotlight presentations’) and in the course Wiki
- write a term paper (details on requirements will be announced in the first session)

Reading materials for each session are either accessible in the University Library and its databases, or will be made available on Stud.IP. Further material will be distributed in class and/ or made available online. Check Stud-IP for updates, announcements, and changes!

In this course, term papers will be due on August 31, 2020. In all likelihood, I will not be able to offer deadline extensions.
