Romantic Poetry

DozentIn: Prof. Dr. phil. Thomas Kullmann

Veranstaltungstyp: Seminar

Ort: 22/105

Zeiten: Mi. 08:15 - 09:45 (wöchentlich)

Beschreibung: When people refer to “poetry” they often mean “Romantic poetry”: Romantic poems are considered to be about love, nature, and unhappiness, three topics taken to be quintessentially poetic. As a movement, however, Romanticism goes beyond these clichés. It can be considered a counter-movement to rationalism and a discovery of subjectivity, with consequences in the areas of politics, society and religion.
In this seminar we will concentrate on close readings of short poems on a wide variety of subjects. Please acquire the following anthology:
Jonathan and Jessica Wordsworth, eds. The Penguin Book of Romantic Poetry. Harmondsworth: Penguin, 2005, copies of which will be made available at Buchhandlung zur Heide.
and read the poems on pages 350-446 and 682-753 (you may also read the others if you wish).
Please do not acquire any other edition. There might be a chance to pick up reasonably-priced second-hand copies on the internet (e.g. bookfinder.com)
If you wish to take part in the course, please give me a phone call (0541/969-4985, Mondays to Fridays, 10.30 to 12.30 hours, or 8.30 to 12.30 from 19. 7. 2021), in addition to registering on StudIP. If I can accept you, you will be given a guaranteed place in the course, and in turn make a commitment to attend it.
There will be a short test on the poem’s topics and contents in the first session of our seminar.
