Exotic Worlds in 19th-Century English Poetry

DozentIn: Prof. Dr. phil. Thomas Kullmann

Veranstaltungstyp: Seminar

Ort: 41/E07

Zeiten: Mi. 18:00 - 19:30 (wöchentlich)

Beschreibung: In the nineteenth century many English people dreamed of a warmer climate, a more natural life, esp. a more fulfilling love-life, as well as meaningful spiritual guidance. This is why people were fascinated by stories of exotic countries and literary products of non-European cultures.
We are going to read five poetic texts which testify to this fascination:
Thomas Moore, Lalla Rookh (1817),
Lord Byron, The Island (1819),
Harriet Emma Burton, Lindah, or the Festival (1845),
Fitzgerald, Edward, The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (1859),
Ralph T. H. Griffith, Scenes from the Ramayan of Valmiki (1868),
Edwin Arnold, The Light of Asia (1879).
Please copy the texts from the master-copies left at Copy Shop Dialog, Süsterstr. 29 (from 29 June 2018).
Credits will be awarded on the basis of regular attendance, an oral report and (if stipulated by the Prüfungsordnung) a written term paper. Please register for the course in one of my office hours (StudIP registration is not sufficient); anyone registering in person until 18 October 2018 will get a place (irrespective of StudIP.), and make a commitment to attend the seminar.
And please make sure you have read the texts by the beginning of the semester (there will be a short test on plots and characters).
