Beschreibung: This introductory course is one of the components of the ANG-B-LK-Module and has been designed for first year bachelor’s students in English and American Studies. It offers students an introduction to the basics of anglophone literary and cultural studies. Students who fully prepare assigned readings, fulfil all tasks, and submit all required assignments should:
• Gain understanding of what culture is and what makes it powerful
• Consider and engage with different kinds of literary value
• Develop skills of close reading, critical thinking, and argument articulation
• Gain understanding of how representation works, and of the relations between representation and power
• Consider and engage with the material dimensions of culture
• Practice analysing different kinds of media, taking into consideration their modes of transmission and circulation
• Engage and analyse literary and cultural texts through different critical approaches
• Acquire familiarity with the mechanics of academic writing
Content note: In the course of the seminar, we will read and address sensitive subjects and language. Please be prepared for this throughout your engagement with the materials.
