Beschreibung: “I cannot really change for the better. If I were to marry, I must expect to repent it.” So says the heroine of Jane Austen’s Emma. For some, Austen is English literature’s most enduring purveyor of the heterosexual marriage plot. For others, her signature irony and errant female leads suggest critique and transgression. Is Elizabeth Bennet really a feminist? Is it plausible to read Emma as queer? In this blockseminar, we’ll engage closely with Austen’s stylistic and narrative choices as we think through these questions and others concerning gender, sexuality and class. We’ll read Pride and Prejudice (1813) and Emma (1815), and look at selected adaptations (filmic, and the odd meme), and consider them in light of feminist and queer approaches.
For ease of reference, the following editions are recommended: Pride and Prejudice ISBN 978-0-141-19907-8; Emma ISBN 978-0-141-43958-7
