Beschreibung: Hamlet is one of the most famous and most controversial works of world literature. We are going to discuss the play in the contexts of cultural concepts of late sixteenth-century England, e. g. concerning kingship, religion, melancholy and theatre. Participants should be prepared to read – in addition to "Hamlet" - one or two other texts of Shakespeare’s time, according to individual arrangement.
Another issue will be the art of performing Shakespeare: We are going to prepare scenic reading, or even a performance of "Hamlet"; taking part in this theatrical project will qualify as “Studiennachweis” for those who attend the course as a component of “Freier Wahlbereich” . Furthermore, I hope to be able to arrange an excursion to Stratford-upon-Avon and London. This excursion will also be open to non-participants, and there is no requirement for seminar participants to take part in it.

Please register for the course in person, seeing me in my office (preferably after making an appointment by e-mail) before the beginning of the semester. StudIP registration is not sufficient.
And please make sure you have read the play before term starts (There will be a short test on plot and characters).
