Beschreibung: This course is principally intended for students working toward their Bachelor’s and Master’s theses as well as their term papers in American Studies. Over the duration of the course, we will focus on learning how to argue a point of view, while taking into account the considered positions developed by other scholars. Firstly, we will take stock of your own work in progress via classroom presentations and feedback rounds, and then address general issues encountered while writing a thesis, such as, finding a relevant and productive topic, evaluating secondary literature, and developing a cogent argument. We will also discuss possible ways of avoiding ‘bleached-out emptiness’ in your head and strategies of time management. Moreover, we will take up formal matters, for instance, the structure of your paper, research methods, citation formats, etc. Thus, in our classes, we will…
• critically engage with current debates in the field of American Studies
• read and discuss extracts from research projects
• read and discuss excerpts from your term papers
