Spoken Language

DozentIn: Dr. phil. Meike Pentrel, M.A.

Veranstaltungstyp: Seminar

Ort: 41/215

Zeiten: Mi. 10:00 - 12:00 (wöchentlich)

Beschreibung: In this course we will look specifically at spoken language. Spoken language differs a lot from written language, not only does it include phonological features, such as intonation or pitch, but it also contains many structures which are almost unique to spoken data, such as fragments and other non-sentential utterances. Early influential linguists, like Saussure or Bloomfield, have emphasized the “primacy of spoken language”, yet most of linguistic theory building is based on written data.
We will take a look at various phenomena of spoken language, discuss up-to-date research on features of spoken English and explore implications for linguistic theories. The course will be a mix of class discussion, short presentations, hands-on data sessions, and it will offer plenty of research opportunity. A bibliography and further details regarding CP-assignments will be given in the first session.
