Shakespeare's Tragedies of Love: Romeo and Juliet, Othello, Macbeth

Beschreibung: In several of Shakespeare's plays love leads to tragedy: As Romantic lovers Romeo and Juliet meet with a tragic endings, and in Othello and Macbeth married love causes catastrophe.
We are going to discuss Shakespeare's treatment of love as a psychological and anthropological phenomenon, as well as his use of the discourses of courtliness, politics and 'otherness'
Another issue will be the art of performing Shakespeare: We are going to prepare a scenic reading of Romeo and Juliet; taking part in this reading will qualify as “Studiennachweis” for those who attend the course as a component of "Freier Wahlbereich" or wish to take the 2 LP option of L3.
Participants are also invited to take part in an excursion to Stratford-upon-Avon, scheduled for 4 to 8 September 2018, where we may see Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth (Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford) and Othello (Shakespeare's Globe, London). Costs: ca. € 450,-. There is no obligation to take part in this excursion.
The excursion is also open to non-participants in the seminar.
Please enrol for the course in my office hour; StudIP registration is not sufficient. Those who are interested in taking part in the excursion should contact me as soon as possible.
Texts: Editions of the Arden Shakespeare, to be made available at zur Heide bookshop. Please do not acquire any other edition. And please read the four plays before term starts (There will be a short test on plots and characters)
