American Musical Theater

DozentIn: Dr. phil. Elisabeth Reichel

Veranstaltungstyp: Seminar

Ort: nicht angegeben

Zeiten: Mi. 14:00 - 16:00 (wöchentlich)

Beschreibung: This course explores American musical theater from its late-nineteenth-century origins to the very present. In 2020, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama was once again awarded to a musical, Michael R. Jackson’s A Strange Loop, only a few years after Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton: An American Musical, Pulitzer Prize winner of 2016, came to rank as one of the most popular theater productions in American history. Taking its cue from this historical moment in the form’s critical and mainstream success, the course delves more deeply into American musical theater as a form of theater that combines music, dance, dialogue, and song. Students learn about its history, aesthetics, functions, and discourses as well as its particular place in American literature and culture. They further acquire tools to analyze multimedial performances and enhance their close reading skills.

All primary and secondary literature will be announced in class.
