Beschreibung: This course is part of the “I-Modul” and should be taken in conjunction with Professor Siepmann’s corresponding course.
One of the most successful traditions of English fiction is the detective story which took its rise in the late Victorian age and reached its heyday in the years between the two world wors.
We are going to read:
Arthur Conan Doyle, The Hound of the Baskervilles (1891), Wordsworth Classics ed.
A. A. Milne, The Red House Mystery (1922)
Dorothy Sayers, Gaudy Night (1936); Hodder paperbacks (from 22 Sept. 2016)
Agatha Christie, Cat among the Pigeons (1959); HarperCollins ed.
Copies of the texts by Doyle, Sayers and Christie will be made available at Buchhandlung zur Heide; you can obtain copies of The Red House Mystery at CopyShop Dialog, Süsterstr. 29 (from 6 July 2016). Please do not acquire any other editions, and, yes, you will need a printed book or copy, not a text projected onto a notebook screen!
Credit requirements include regular attendance and an oral report (for the exam cf. the Modulbeschreibung). Please register for the course in one of my office hours (StudIP registration is not sufficient); anyone registering in person until 20 October 2016 will get a place in the course, irrespective of StudIP.
And please make sure you have read the books by the beginning of the semester (there will be a short test on plots and characters).
