Teaching Speaking Skills

Beschreibung: Please note that this seminar is only open to M.A. students. Bachelor students are welcome to attend as guests, but will only be able to actively take part if fewer than 30 M.A. students commit to the course.

Speaking skills is a course that will require your full commitment and weekly active participation.

We will discuss the challenges involved in teaching speaking skills, consider cognitive, psycholinguistic and social factors and look at a number of possible activities and methodologies suitable for all school types and levels. Topics covered will include:

- The cognitive processes involved in L1 and L2 speech production
- The grammar of spoken English
- Oral production and communicative approaches to second language acquisition
- In-class speaking activities
- Communicative language games
- Monitoring and giving corrective feedback during speaking activities
- Teaching pronunciation and intonation
- Overcoming language learner anxiety and boosting students’ motivation
- Assessing spoken language production

If you wish to obtain credit points for your participation in this course, you will be required to:
- Attend and participate on a regular basis
- Plan and (co-)lead a class session on a given topic
- Pass a 90 min examination at the end of the semester
