Beschreibung: Liebe Online Krieger*innen.
Bevor Sie sich auf dieses Seminar einlassen, ein paar Worte zur Einführung.
1. Englisch ist die Sprache, in der wir während der Sitzungen kommunizieren und in der Aufgaben gestellt und schriftlich oder mündlich bearbeitet werden. Auf Deutsch kommunizieren wir außerhalb einer Sitzung in Mails oder bei Telefonaten.
2. Das Seminar wird von Frau E. gr. Beilage und mir angeboten. Frau gr. Beilage ist eine pensionierte Lehrerin und hat einen <unbesoldeten Lehrauftrag<. Ich bin alleine für rechtliche Aspekte des Seminars verantwortlich (Aufgabenstellung, Notengebung).
3. Im Laufe eines Semesters entwickeln wir freundschaftliche Beziehungen zu unseren Studierenden. Deshalb erlauben wir uns, diese mit Vornamen und „Sie“ anzusprechen. Lassen Sie uns wissen, wenn Ihnen das nicht recht ist. Wir respektieren selbstverständlich Ihren Wunsch.
4. Die Online Lehre ist eine Notmaßnahme und wir vermissen den direkten Kontakt mit Ihnen. Deshalb freue ich mich, wenn Sie mich zur Zeit unseres Seminars in der Zeit von 10:00 bis 11:00 auch „nur mal so“ zu einem Schwätzchen anrufen unter 0541-969-42.58.
5. In der ersten Sitzung werde ich mich per Big Blue Button (BBB) vorstellen, damit Sie sehen und hören, mit wem Sie es zu tun haben. Dabei können Sie Fragen zum Seminar und zu allen Themen stellen, welche Sie bewegen.
6. Das Seminar wird kein Präsenzseminar sein, in dem Sie zu jeder Sitzung vor Ihrem PC sitzen müssen. An jedem Seminartag werden zu dem jeweiligen Text/Thema Fragen und Aufgaben gestellt, die Sie innerhalb von sechs Tagen schriftlich bearbeiten und in StudIP hochladen müssen. Das hat für Sie den Vorteil, dass Sie zur gleichen Zeit an Präsenzseminaren teilnehmen können.
7. Zur Anrechnung des Seminars ist es wichtig, dass Sie zu jeder Sitzung die Aufgaben im vorgegebenen Zeitrahmen schriftlich bearbeiten und hochladen. Ausnahmen sind zu begründen.

Organization: Course Requirements and Procedures
When you join this seminar, you have Hobson´s Choice in the following points:
1. Look up the term <Hobson´s Choice<.
2. Go to the online list of <Set Texts< of this seminar.
3. All seminar members are required to read the text set for the date given in the seminar working schedule (Ablaufplan).
4. We do not allocate texts. You choose the text you want to be responsible for as a Moderator.
5. If there are enough seminar members, it makes sense to team up with another participant. No more than two in a team.
6. This is a <learning-by-doing< seminar: You select one text or topic session and will be responsible for teaching it. You become the Moderator of that session. That means that you create a quiz of a minimum of three and a maximum of five questions on your text/topic, which are to be discussed by seminar members. No simple questions, which can be answered by <Yes/No>. Be creative and provocative to make fellow students think.
7. Moderators send me their draft (doc, rtf) three days before their session for correction and suggestions. Then they upload it on StudIP at least one day before their session. In their mail they give their telephone number for interactive communication without delays in mail correspondence.
8. The other seminar members post their responses in the seminar´s Forum for comments by fellow students within six days of that session. The responses should be in key words/short sentences and not longer than one printed page. I may contact members in response to their contribution.
9. During our seminar session you can telephone me 10:00 to 11.00 in my office (0541-969.42.58).
10. You can send me an email at any time. Please, include your telephone number so that I can call you back. That saves lengthy mail correspondence.

Jane Austen (1775 – 1817) created world classics, which still mesmerize readers today.A
Her novels were published under pseudonym “A Lady”.
In 1994 the literary critic Harold Bloom placed her among “the greatest Western writers of all time “.
The Ten Pound English banknote (issued since 2017) has Her Majesty’s portrait on the front and J.A. on the back.
Does J. A. “ride piggy-back” on the Queen?
During the Chinese Cultural Revolution of 1966–69, Austen was banned as a "British bourgeois imperialist". In the late 1970s, when Austen was finally published in China, her popularity with readers confounded the authorities who had trouble understanding that people generally read books for enjoyment, not political edification.
We will study:
• Sense and Sensibility (1811),
• Pride and Prejudice (1813),
• Northanger Abbey (1818)
Some of our questions:
1. Why are J. Austen´s novels still so popular today?
2. What can we learn about the life and times in which her novels are set?
3. Which aspects of daily life in 18th century England are not covered in her novels?
4. What is the political/historical background of J.A.s `life? Which events are/are not mentioned in her novels?
5. Which contemporary novelists treat issues not covered by Austen´s novels?
