Beschreibung: This course consists of two parts, one taught by Prof. Siepmann, the other one by Prof. Kullmann.
In recent years, English novelists have experimented with various ways of conveying history by means of fiction. These books focus on unknown sides of British history and reflect current debates on how history should be studied and taught. We are going to read:
– Graham Swift, Waterland (1983)
– Penelope Lively, Moon Tiger (1988)
– Beryl Bainbridge, Master Georgie (1998)
– Hilary Mantel, Wolf Hall (2011)
Credit requirements include regular attendance. In Prof. Kullmann’s part of the course, participants are requested to give an oral report (for the exam cf. the Modulbeschreibung). Please register for the course in one of Prof. Kullmann’s office hours (StudIP registration is not sufficient); anyone registering in person until 12 October 2017 will get a place in the course, irrespective of StudIP.
And please make sure you have read the books by the beginning of the semester (there will be a short test on plots and characters). Copies of the book will be available at zur Heide bookshop.
