Beschreibung: Focus: The British Isles
In this course we will look at the many English varieties, focusing especially on inner circle varieties, i.e. those spoken on the British Isles. After discussing general issues such as the difference between accent v. dialect or standard v. non-standard,
Over the course of the seminar we will analyse and describe variation on all linguistic levels including phonology, lexicon, grammar. To account for some of the more recent regional/social varieties emerging in Great Britain we will also discuss processes like creolization or language types like pidgins and koines.

Large parts of the seminar will be dedicated to individual group research projects, in small groups you will be asked to analyze a speaker, present your findings and conclusions in one way or another in class and hand in your project in a written form at the end of the seminar. The grade of your project will be the grade of this seminar.
More information regarding the seminar organization and CP requirements will be supplied in the first session.


Please note: This seminar is designed for 4CP students only (V2, I-Module). Should you need only 2 CP please enroll in my "History of the English Language"-lecture.
Should there be any reasons why you cannot attend that lecture please send me an e-mail before the seminar starts. Only under certain circumstances, such as a particular interest in the topic, a provable scheduling conflict, or when you have already attended that lecture, you may approach me about completing this class for 2CP.
