Beschreibung: We are going to read four “Anglo-Indian” novels, that is, novels by English men and women resident in, or visitors, to, colonial India, published from 1872 to 1924. Our primary concern will be the depiction of contacts between native Indians and Europeans, and what they say about prevalent attitudes with regard to the English and Indian cultures:
We are going to read:
Meadows Taylor, Seeta (1872)
Flora Annie Steel, On the Face of the Waters (1896),
Bithia Croker, In Old Madras (1911),
E. M. Forster, A Passage to India (1924), ed. Oliver Stallybrass, Penguin Classics ed.

Copies of A Passage to India will be made available at zur Heide, please do not use any other edition. Please copy the other texts from mastercopies left at CopyShop Dialog, Süsterstr. 29. And make sure you have read the books by the beginning of the semester.
