Beschreibung: Professional Writing and Discussion classes are designed to allow students – under the guidance of their course instructors – to undertake a more active and independent development of their language skills by applying them to a specific topic area. Ultimately, the central aim of these courses, whatever topic area and skills focus you choose, is to facilitate your transition into a self-sufficient and proficient user of the English language. You will continue to train your productive and receptive language skills, you will further expand your lexico-grammatical knowledge in connection with the specialist language used in the course, and you will acquire supplementary cultural knowledge on English-speaking countries. You will be expected to attend class regularly and contribute actively and intelligently. Furthermore, you will need to complete oral and written tasks during the course of these classes and will need to submit a final written task by the end of the teaching semester.

In this particular course, we will explore the concept of creativity and its many definitions. This will be followed by our analysing and trying out a number of creative language learning activities and strategies. We will consider to what extent creativity and language go hand in hand, looking at e.g. neologisms, word play, lingua franca communication, youth language, and creative language use in literature, poetry, song-writing and advertising. Perspectives for creativity in language learning and teaching will be evaluated and ultimately, we will form a view on the extent to which creativity can and should play a role in communication. An online course reader with relevant literature and various media sources will be made available in advance on the course platform.
