Beschreibung: *IMPORTANT: It is likely that this course will be taking place during its usual times in an online classroom (via BigBlueButton). Please only sign up for this class if you are able and willing, and in possession of the necessary equipment (stable internet connection, microphone, webcam) in order to accomplish this.

Professional Writing and Discussion classes are designed to allow students – under the guidance of their course instructors – to undertake a more active and independent development of their language skills by applying them to a specific topic area. Ultimately, the central aim of these courses, whatever topic area and skills focus you choose, is to facilitate your transition into a self-sufficient and proficient user of the English language. You will continue to train your productive and receptive language skills, you will further expand your lexico-grammatical knowledge in connection with the specialist language used in the course, and you will acquire supplementary cultural knowledge on English-speaking countries. You will be expected to attend class regularly and contribute actively and intelligently. Furthermore, you will need to complete oral and written tasks during the course of these classes, hold a graded session and submit a final 2500-word written portfolio, addressing aspects covered in the course in greater depth.

In this particular seminar, we will turn our attention to the LGBTQIA+ community. We will primarily look into various elements of queer culture, including community-specific language. We will discuss representation of the LGBTQIA+ community in numerous fields, including politics, entrepreneurship and popular culture. In addition, we will examine differences in how the community and its members are treated in different English-speaking cultures and what social movements are currently happening with the aim of improving social conditions for members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Furthermore, we will look into areas of contention and the different points of view represented within the community, as well as how these views are informed by intersectionality with e.g. race, religion, political orientation and social class.

TRIGGER WARNING: it is possible that we will hear accounts of discrimination, toxic masculinity and physical, emotional and sexual violence (including rape) towards people of all genders and sexual orientations, as well as the resulting impact on mental and physical health, potentially including suicide. If this is likely to prove very distressing for you, you may wish to consider whether this is the course you would truly like to take. I will offer every support possible, but please reach out and speak with me in advance if you have any concerns.

PLEASE NOTE: This course has been created due to high student demand to speak about queer culture and issues in their target language of English. The course will also be recognised for the university's certificate in Gender Studies. It is recommended (though not compulsory) that you consider taking this course together with "The Language of Gender and Sexual Orientation", which focuses more on terminology, rights and discrimination. Students from the LGBTQIA+ community are explicitly welcome in both of these classes and efforts will be made to ensure as much representation as possible if I am aware of the demand in advance. It should also be noted, though, that the course is also designed to further the knowledge of non-members of the LGBTQIA+ community, so please manage your expectations in this regard.

Up to eight spots in the course can be allocated in advance to students who attend my online office hours in February (register at the bottom of my Stud.IP profile) and confirm that they are prepared to commit to taking the course and have identified topics that they would like to focus on during the course. Please note that the Stud.IP registration procedure is not binding and that the remaining spots in the course will be allocated based on level of need shortly before the first class session.
