Beschreibung: Four of Shakespeare’s plays are set in ancient Rome:
Titus Andronicus
Julius Caesar
Antony and Cleopatra
Coriolanus
The Roman setting allows Shakespeare to discuss political and ethical issues such as the distribution of power, the roles of the ruler and the people, the ethics of killing tyrants and waging war etc. We are going to discuss these issues, as well as the use of rhetorics and dramatic structure.
Another issue will be the art of performing Shakespeare: We are going to prepare a scenic reading of Julius Caesar for the “Campus Night” scheduled for 10 June 2017; taking part in this reading will qualify as “Studiennachweis” for those who take the course as Wahlbereich or ‘Studiennachweis component’ of L3.
Participants are also invited to take part in an excursion to Stratford-upon-Avon, scheduled for 30 August to 3 September 2017, where we may see Titus Andronicus and Julius Caesar (costs: ca. € 450,-). There is no obligation to take part in this excursion.
The excursion is also open to non-participants in the seminar.
Please enrol for the course in my office hour; StudIP registration is not sufficient. Those who are interested in taking part in the excursion should contact me as soon as possible, and enrol by 15 February.
Texts: Editions of the Arden Shakespeare, to be made available at zur Heide bookshop. Please do not acquire any other edition. And please read the four plays before term starts (There will be a short test on plots and characters)
