Beschreibung: This is a course in American Studies which aims at exploring the multiple contexts of early twentieth century literary modernism. Viewed as an ambivalent response to technological modernity as well as the politics of race that defined the American experience during this period, modernism resists straightforward definitions. In this seminar, we will examine three of its prominent characterizations, namely, modernism as a literary/artistic response to a specific period within American history, as an intense preoccupation and engagement with the literary form, and as a transatlantic intellectual project. After tackling contextual and critical readings pertaining to the subject, we will turn to a selection of both poetic and fictional texts for close reading and further analysis. For the most part, this selection will attempt to place literary works considered to be modernist classics in dialogue with those identified with the Harlem Renaissance.
In order to take and enjoy this class, you should be willing to read, analyze, and discuss theoretical and analytical texts, as well as poetry and narrative fiction. Please note that this seminar can be taken as either a Literary Studies or a Cultural Studies course. Furthermore, it is recommended for fourth and fifth semester students of English and American Studies, as it builds on students’ sound awareness and understanding of critical approaches to the study of literature.
Please note that a list of primary texts will be appended soon. The required readings with a tentative schedule will be made available online on Stud.IP before our first class. Please check the course webpages on Stud.IP regularly for updates, announcements, and changes.
