Harry Potter and the English School Story

DozentIn: Prof. Dr. phil. Thomas Kullmann

Veranstaltungstyp: Seminar

Ort: 15/105

Zeiten: Mi. 08:15 - 09:45 (wöchentlich)

Beschreibung: As a series of school stories, the Harry Potter volumes are part of a long tradition in British literary history. One of the first, and trend-setting, books was Thomas Hughes’, Tom Brown’s Schooldays (1857) about Rugby School, and since then, school stories about boys’ and even more, girls’ boarding schools have been extraordinarily popular.
We are going to look at this tradition, find out about recurrent motifs and their development and try to place these stories into cultural history.
We are going to read the following texts:
Thomas Hughes. Tom Brown’s Schooldays (1857), ed. Andrew Sanders (Oxford World’s Classics ed.
L. T. Meade, A World of Girls (1886)
Elinor Brent-Dyer, The School at the Châlet (1925)
J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (1997) (ISBN 978-1408855652)
J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2003) (ISBN 978-1408855690)
