Beschreibung: Mary says soda- I say pop. James says "he ain't gonna come"- I say "He won't come"
This class is designed to look at the linguistic and social factors involved in creating the variability in the English language we see above. Which factors are involved in making English speakers use their mother tongue in a certain way? And in which ways is this usage meaningful?
This class will use your basic knowledge in the fields of linguistics(syntax, phonology, morphology ...) in order to exemplify the methods used to find patterns in language variation. In other words: we will look at various ways to quantify the difference between Mary's and James' speech.
Students will be required to read and prepare for class on a weekly basis. Some hands-on analysis tasks will require teamwork.
