Writing the Colonies: Early American Textualities

DozentIn: Prof. Dr. phil. Peter Schneck , Kristalyn Shefveland

Veranstaltungstyp: Seminar

Ort: 41/101

Zeiten: Do. 10:00 - 12:00 (wöchentlich)

Beschreibung: Colonial American writing in the 17th and 18th Century embraced a stunning diversity of forms and functions, covering an extensive range of genres – from private letters, diaries and memoirs to official historiographies sponsored by the church and the state, from religious tracts to administrative and legal documents, from business ledgers and trade documents to established literary genres like poetry or satire.
Looking at these diverse manifestations of writing (and reading) as corresponding textualities, rather than separate genres of literary, historical or legal texts with clearly defined formal and functional features, colonial writing may be conceived of as a field of overlapping discourses - an ongoing conversation, both collaborative and conflicting - whose common concern was to come to terms with, negotiate and control the 'vicissitudes of coloniality.'
In this master workshop we will read and discuss a selected group of texts (and excerpts of texts) from various genres and fields of colonial writing, in order to regain a sense of their potential correspondence and conversation in regard to the experience and management of coloniality with the help of writing. Our focus will be on the 'Southern Colonies' rather than New England; examples will include texts by William Byrd, John Lederer, but we may also look at legal documents, letters, diaries etc.
This workshop is a research based and oriented and suitable for all Master students from English and American Literature, American Studies and History, especially if they are interested in writing their thesis in the field of U.S-American colonial history, literature and culture. Students in teachers education (Lehramt) who want to take course, have to contact the instructor in advance. If you are not sure whether you are eligible for the course, contact the instructors in time before the class commences.
