Beschreibung: Poetry has often been considered to be a “highbrow” genre. Actually, however, particular forms of poetry have always played a significant role in popular, even mass, culture. In this seminar we will take a look at some of the most popular poetical genres, starting from medieval English ballads and songs, up to present-day children’s rhymes and the lyrics of pop songs.
The course consists of two weekly sessions: In the Thursday session we are going to look at the lyrical texts from a literary point of view, identifying motifs, traditions, stylistic means etc. This part of the course is also open to students who wish to get credit points for “Freier Wahlbereich” or “Fachliche Vertiefung”.
Those who wish to do the course as “I-Modul” are asked to attend the Monday session as well. In this part of the course we are going to look at “prosody” (rhythm, rhyme, metre etc,) from a linguistic point of view.
By 1 September 2019, you will find a reader containing poetical texts at CopyShop Dialog, Süsterstr. 29. Please copy the texts and read them by the beginning of the semester (there well be a short test on titles/contents).
Credits will be awarded on the basis of regular attendance, an oral report and a written term paper. Please register for the course in one of my office hours (StudIP registration is not sufficient); anyone registering in person until 24 October 2019 will get a place in the course, irrespective of StudIP.
