Beschreibung: How do languages evolve from one state to another or even one language to another? Where do these changes come from? And how do we predict future changes based on our knowledge of the past?
These and other questions will be answered by first analysing linguistic changes on the lexical, semantic, sound and structural level. In a second step, we will then look at the spread of change, the involvement of language contact in language change and lastly the various language relations we have uncovered in the linguistic field.
The following book will serve as an introduction throughout the course:
Kate Burridge and Alexander Bergs (2016). Understanding Language Change. Routledge
