Beschreibung: Global drag superstar RuPaul famously declared, “We are all born naked and the rest is drag!“. What exactly did RuPaul mean by that? What explains the critical and commercial success of the reality-TV show "Drag Race" (26 Emmy Awards)? What does the current mainstream fascination with drag reveal about norms of gender and sexuality? What is understood by the terms “disability drag” and “critical drag”? Why is cross-dressing such a frequent feature of Disney movies? What are the historical and contemporary ties between drag and the law in America? And why did Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently claim that drag “is what America is all about”? In this class, we will try to answer these questions and more, by tracing various forms and functions of drag across time and different media on the North American continent and beyond.
