Beschreibung: The lecture will focus on the literature of the 'discovery' of America during the early modern period as well as on various texts which prepared and commented on the subsequent conquest and colonization of the 'New World' from the early 17th to the 18th century. Looking both at texts and their historical and cultural contexts, the lecture will be concerned with the literary construction of 'America' as an utopian space, a space for European 'regeneration' and 'recreation,' as well as a real space to be appropriated and settled to realize the 'City upon the Hill' which formed the foundation of the complex interrelation between the New World and the Old.
