Beschreibung: Being an established part of the literary canon, Jane Austen’s novels belong to the most frequently adapted pieces of literature. Especially the 1990s witnessed a sheer abundance of film adaptations of her fiction both for cinema and television.
In this course, we will examine the reasons for Austen’s continuous popularity and the ways in which her novels are not only adapted for the screen but also adapted to the expectations of contemporary audiences. We will also look at differences between those adaptations that suggest faithfulness to the original novels and those that deliberately transport these stories to our own time. Taking Austen’s novels Pride and Prejudice and Emma as examples, we will look at a sample of four very different screen versions of the novels: Pride & Prejudice (2005), You’ve Got M@il (1998), Emma (1996), and Clueless (1995).
All these adaptations are available either via Netflix or Amazon Prime. However, we will also have an in-course screening of all four movies.
