Beschreibung: Why do we say strong tea, but not powerful tea? What is the difference between big and large? And when do we use begin to V or start to V (or begin V-ing or start V-ing)? Who says …and he’s like ‘Gosh!’ and under which conditions? Proficient speakers of a language have intuitive knowledge of the co-selection of words (‘collocations’) and how words combine in larger structures (their ‘phraseology’). Mastering these patterns in a foreign language is what makes a speaker ‘fluent’ or ‘native-like’ and is at least as important as knowing vocabulary or ‘rules’. The question is which tools and methods linguists and language teachers employ to study grammatical patterns. In other words: how we go about ‘describing and analysing grammar’?

Come along and get your hands dirty with cool language data analysis!
