American Gothic Fiction

DozentIn: Dr. phil. Elisabeth Reichel

Veranstaltungstyp: Seminar

Ort: 41/E08

Zeiten: Di. 14:00 - 16:00 (wöchentlich)

Beschreibung: Combining high art and popular culture, Gothic literature has long fascinated both lay readers and literary scholars. Through text-, context-, and reader-centered approaches, scholars have tried to account for its characteristic interests—in the supernatural, the reappearance of the past, and the connection of pleasure and terror. In this course, our specific interest lies with the Gothic tradition of American fiction. Over the course of the semester, students learn about the history, aesthetics, functions, and discourses of American Gothic fiction as well as enhance their close reading skills and ability to conduct critical textual analyses (competence-oriented learning). They are required to
- carefully read primary and secondary texts and take notes before class
- actively participate in the discussion in class
- give a presentation [Studiennachweis] or write a term paper [Prüfungsleistung]
All primary and secondary literature will be announced in class.
