Beschreibung: This seminar will offer a selective overview of English-language writing from the African continent published between the 1950s and 1990 – the era of decolonization and early post-independence disillusionment. We’ll read Amos Tutuola’s The Palm-Wine Drinkard (1952, Nigeria), Alex La Guma’s A Walk in the Night (1962, South Africa), Ama Ata Aidoo’s Our Sister Killjoy (1977, Ghana), and Tsitsi Dangarembga’s Nervous Conditions (1988, Zimbabwe), and discuss them in light of a number of thematic concerns including orality and folktale, resistance writing, gender and sexuality, and mental health. Students are encouraged to acquire and begin reading the primary texts as soon as possible.
For ease of reference, the following editions are recommended: The Palm-Wine Drinkard ISBN 978-0-571-31153-8, A Walk in the Night ISBN 978-1-03-590614-7, Our Sister Killjoy ISBN 978-0-571-38800-4, Nervous Conditions ISBN 978-0-571-36812-9.
Please note that in the course of this seminar we will address and discuss sensitive topics and language.
