Beschreibung: Course description:
This course teaches students about the fundamentals of linguistics, experimentation and open science. After introducing the foundations, we will go through a number of experimental case studies with a particular focus on design aspects. Our topics range from core aspects of meaning, language in context, language processing and learning to social aspects of language interpretation (politeness and discriminatory language use).
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course, students will:
1. have an overview of different theories and methods in linguistics
2. know about the basics of experiment design
4. know to read and critically evaluate scientific papers

Assessment and Grading:
Final exam. Regular attendance is expected.
Course requirements:
· In-person attendance is strongly encouraged (there will be exercises preparing you for the exam exclusive to in-person audience).
. Handing in a summary of the lecture (due date 27th January, about half a page per session,
not graded).
. Midterm exam on 9th December (not graded)
. Final exam on 27th January (final grade)
. Retake exam on 10th February (only for students who were sick on 27th or are doing a
semester abroad)
