Beschreibung: Over the past few decades, new models and theories of narrative fiction have been explored and discussed. The course will look at some of these new approaches while focusing on the question, how they change our ways of reading fiction, i.e. specifically how does our understanding of the process of narration influence our readings of narrative fictions, what is the relation between our capabilities and, indeed, willingness in regard to engage with fictional narratives and our expectations and ideas about such narratives. in order to address these questions, the course will have to engage in the discussion of rather advanced theoretical and conceptual scholarship - at the same time, it will explore and test some of the theoretical assumptions by reading and discussing exemplary literary texts.
This course is not for the faint of heart but for the brave and curious - you don't have to be a theory nerd or know everything about narratology (?!). But you certainly need to be interested and eager to read and reflect in order to learn. I would encourage all students interested in the course to contact me in advance and arrange a meeting (online or other) to make an informed choice to join the course.
