When Literature Mattered: Debates in Third-Worldist Culture

DozentIn: Juniorprof. Dr. Lucy Gasser

Veranstaltungstyp: Seminar

Ort: 15/113

Zeiten: Di. 14:00 - 16:00 (wöchentlich)

Beschreibung: Though predominantly negative associations attach to the term ‘Third World’ today, it was once understood as a positively imagined political alternative. During the Cold War, and the era of decolonization with which it coincided, Third-Worldism was a cultural and political project that moved millions. It was a time when literature really seemed to matter, and superpower governments carved out substantial budgets for cultural projects to extend their spheres of influence. In the Third World, language, literature, and their relationship to politics were hotly debated. In this seminar, we’ll consider some of these debates in context, and read extracts from Wole Soyinka’s The Interpreters (will be provided) and Alex La Guma’s Time of the Butcherbird (in full, please acquire your own copy – for ease of reference, this edition is recommended: ISBN 9781035900640).

Please note that in the course of the seminar, we will read and address sensitive subjects and language.
