Modernism in Global Contexts

Beschreibung: English-language literary modernism is often framed as an Anglo-American phenomenon, whose influence and innovations radiated outward from a few metropoles in the Global North. In this seminar, we’ll try to nuance and decenter some of these traditional understandings, as we consider modernism in its global dimensions, and read texts from New Zealand, South Africa, India, and Britain. Our discussions will pay particular attention to the formal qualities of the literature, configurations of the self, time, and the role of art, as well as relations to empire, religion, and gender.
We’ll read Katherine Mansfield’s short stories, “Prelude”, and “Bliss” (1918), an excerpt from Olive Schreiner’s Story of an African Farm (1883) (these will be provided), and two slim novels in full: Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse (1927), and Mulk Raj Anand’s Untouchable (1935). Please acquire copies of these yourself. For ease of reference, the following editions are recommended, but not compulsory: To the Lighthouse ISBN 978-1-78487-083-6; Untouchable ISBN 978-0-14-139360-5.
