Beschreibung:According to Jacob Burckhardt, the Renaissance is the time of ‘the discovery of the world and of man’. This lecture course is intended to provide a survey of a period (ca. 1530 to 1600) which witnessed fundamental changes in Britain’s political and cultural formation. The course will focus on close readings of selected poems, romances and plays; it goes without saying that Shakespeare will feature prominently. Works of literature will be analysed as to inherent concepts of humanity, power, love and death and their historical and cultural contexts. I recommend reading the following texts: Sidney, Astrophil and Stella (sonnets); Sidney, The Old Arcadia (romance); Spenser, The Faerie Queene (book 1); Shakespeare, The Comedy of Errors, Richard III, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, As You Like It.
