Metaphysical Poetry

DozentIn: Prof. Dr. phil. Thomas Kullmann

Veranstaltungstyp: Seminar

Ort: 22/104

Zeiten: Mi. 08:15 - 09:45 (wöchentlich)

Beschreibung: “Metaphysical Poetry” is a name given to poems composed during the 17th century which are characterized by a clear structure and often contain an argument about either love or religion, or both. Unlike, e. g., Romantic poetry, Metaphysical Poetry is easy to understand.
We shall read the poems contained in the following anthology:
Metaphysical Poetry, ed. Colin Burrow, Penguin Classics. London: Penguin, 2006.
Copies will be made available at Buchhandlung zur Heide (Dielingerstr. 42 B).
Please register for the course in person (preferably after making an appointment by e-mail) StudIP registration is not sufficient.
And please make sure you have read the poems by the beginning of the semester (there will be a short test on the contents of the poems by John Donne, George Herbert, Henry Vaughan, Andrew Marvell, Richard Crashaw, Lord Rochester).
Those who wish to attend this course as part of the I-Modul are asked to complete this module by additionally participating in my corresponding course on “Techniques of Imagery”
