Beschreibung:In Britain, the age of Queen Victoria (1837 to 1901) was characterized by fundamental social and cultural changes in the areas of work, family, class, religious belief and the respective roles of men and women. This lecture course is intended to provide a survey of the early and middle parts of this period, focusing on essays, novels and poems, from both a cultural and a literary point of view. Texts to be discussed will include:
Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights;
Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre,
Villette;
Charles Dickens, David Copperfield
Bleak House;
Wilkie Collins, The Woman in White;
George Eliot, The Mill on the Floss;
Lewis Carroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonder¬land;
John Ruskin, Sesame and Lilies;
Walter Pater, The Renaissance;
Victorian poetry, e. g. by Alfred Tennyson, Robert Browning, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Christina Rossetti.
I recommend reading some of these texts as a preparation. With regard to poetry, please acquire an anthology, e. g. The Penguin Book of Victorian Verse. Walter E. Houghton, The Victorian Frame of Mind, 1830-1870 (New Haven, 1957), can be recommended as an introduction.
Registration through StudIP.
