Beschreibung:We will study fictional texts by authors from former British colonies to see how their protagonists and their families coped with settling down in a country to which they migrated either voluntarily or were forced to migrate. Most authors are migrants or children of immigrants. Therefore, the portrayal of their protagonists may contain autobiographical elements.
Cross-Cultural Encounters. 20th Century English Short Stories (Reclam, 2006) contains:
• M. Spark. “The Black Madonna”. (Immigrants from Jamaica).
• S. Rushdie.” Good Advice is Rarer than Rubies”. (Arranged Marriage from India).
• Q. Shahraz.” A Pair of Jeans”. (Arranged marriage for daughter of immigrants from Pakistan).
• H. Kureishi.” My Son the Fanatic”. (Father and son from Pakistan).
